Our "Cafes and Schools" program was a delight! Thanks to Christina Kelsh and Dave Grippo for hosting us in your schools, and to On the Rise Bakery in Richmond and Village Wine and Coffee in Shelburne for two great shows. We heard from lots of folks who enjoyed hearing classical music in a low-key, comfortable setting, and we will be back with more in the coming season.

JUNE 13-18, 2011
Our Summer Light Music tour of Vermont brings our woodwind quartet to historic and off-the-beaten path venues across northern Vermont. We perform a light set of classical favorites by Britten, Carter, Françaix and Jacob, plus the world premiere of What Pan Was Doing by Vermont composer, Don Jamison, for woodwind quartet/doubling voices. Why no piano, you ask? We were able to play in some more unusual areas of the state, including an off-the-grid church in East Calais and theater in Sheffield, both of which are serviced by outhouses! We also performed in the Historic Huntington Library, the gorgeous Grace Church in Sheldon (see John LeBlanc's beautiful photos we've posted on Facebook), Radio Bean in Burlington, and the Unitarian Church in Jericho.

MARCH 15, 2011
Heliand Trio announces the formation of Heliand Consort, our expanded chamber music ensemble. Inspired by the early music term consort--a small ensemble of like instruments--we will maintain our core of woodwinds & piano and approach future programming with flexibility and breadth as we collaborate with more performers and composers in seasons to come. Currently, the Consort is preparing its first tour of music for woodwind quartet and voices (sung by quartet members). We welcome oboist Katie Oprea and flutist Berta Frank and look forward to sharing some exceptional music from American, French and British composers this June.

Heliand Trio performs at Middlebury College on Friday, October 1st, sponsored by the Middlebury College Department of Music. The program explores the cross-currents of folk, popular and dance music within mid 20th century French and Brazilian music, including that of Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, Villa-Lobos and others.
Famous for their use of folk music & dance rhythms, Brazilian classical composers such as Villa-Lobos and Mignone also kept an eye/ear on their European counterparts, including Boulanger, Milhaud, Debussy, Satie and Stravinsky. Meanwhile, in Paris, harmonies from the Far East, American jazz and folk music from South of the Border were all the rage in the mid 20th century. It was an era of unprecedented fecundity of influences and worldliness in music, which continues to this day.
Heliand Trio's program includes period pieces as well as contemporary selections by Cuban composer, Paquito D'Rivera, and American composer, Bill Douglas, who continue in the tradition of mixing folk and pop elements into modern classical composition.
